FAQ

APP

Which iPhone models does the Arkive app support?

Arkive is designed for the iPhone 6 and newer models.

How should I prepare my photos for printing?

The app is designed for photos that are ready to print. If your images require editing, the Apple Photos app has excellent tools for making adjustments.

Can I print photos from social media?

Yes. Simply save images to your camera roll and open them in the Arkive app. Please note that images from social channels may not be as high quality as images from your camera.

What is the minimum image resolution required to create a print?

The minimum image resolution is determined by the print size. Larger print sizes require higher pixel density. Arkive will automatically check the pixel density and only offer print sizes that are appropriate.

PRINTS

What kind of paper are the photos printed on?

All images are printed on 130 lb Mohawk Options Vellum Cover, Crystal White. The paper is FSC certified and carbon neutral.

Does the paper have a gloss or a matte finish?

The paper we use is within a category called “uncoated”, which has a matte look and feel, and a vellum textured surface.

Will my photos be cropped when they are printed?

Images printed using Arkive are never cropped. The entire photo will be printed as it was uploaded.

Will the Arkive prints fit standard frames?

Arkive prints are sized to fit North American standard frame and mat sizes.

Please note that the image area is intentionally printed slightly larger than the stated 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 8 x 10 and 12 x 16 sizes. This allows for standard mats to fit the prints perfectly—with no white border left showing.

If you choose to frame your Arkive prints without using a mat, you may need to trim the borders to fit inside the frame.

If you have cropped your photo and changed the aspect ratio (length or width) from original, the print will have borders that are wider on two sides. In this case, standard mats may not fit your Arkive print.

Will the prints have a border?

Yes - all prints have an white border added around the uncropped printed image.

What are the print dimensions, including borders?

Arkive prints are available in four sizes: 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, and 12x16. These classic sizes are intended to fit many standard mats and frames.

Print Size Trim Size Image Size Border Size
4 x 6 5 x 6.5 4.5 x 6 .25
5 x 7 5.75 x 7.5 5.25 x 7 .25
8 x 10 8.5 x 11.17 8 x 10.67 .25
12 x 16 12.375 x 16.16 11.375 x 15.16 .5

All dimensions are measured in inches and Image Size dimensions reflect uncropped iPhone photos with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

How will the prints be trimmed if my edited photo has odd dimensions (a 2:1 ratio wide landscape image, for example)?

We will retain the original image aspect ratio and orient the print according to the longest dimension within our standard paper trim size, with a larger border on the other two sides.
